ABOUT US

1. Our History

In the early 1930's a man called Jerry Williams owned a small vessel, the Omokoroa.

Local people started pressuring him to take them out on fishing trips, and it soon became apparent that a purpose-built charter boat would be ideal for fishing trips and to also take over the barging work which was very necessary on the harbour in those days.

The RATAHI was commissioned and built by the O'Rourke brothers in Auckland. She was launched in 1938 and has been working on the harbour and taking people out fishing and to Mayor Island ever since.

We purchased her in 1988, when she was in a very run down state and worked on bringing her up to an excellent standard again. She then worked very successfully out of Whakatane for five years until we moved our whole operation to Tauranga...she was home again!

Recently she has undergoing major improvements with extensions to the wheelhouse to add comfort and user friendliness, and to take her forward for the next 70 years!

2. Our Boats

Te Kuia

TE KUIA (16M) was built in 1978 to cater for the increased population and demand for the various trips. Recently we have fully reconditioned her motor, altered the spacious back cabin and put in accommodation for 10 people for overnight trips.
Te Kuia is one of the most popular charter fishing vessels in Tauranga, comfortable and well built of solid kauri, with extensive seating areas, a huge back cabin, a convenient galley and a large BBQ.

She caters for individuals on public day reef fishing trips and charter groups of up to 35 people.

She is also set up to do overnight trips for up to 11 people with full sized comfortable bunks, specialising in overnight reef fishing around Motiti and overnight hapuka fishing around Mayor Island

The Te Kuia is available for school groups, clubs, families and other large groups of up to 65 for drop offs to Mayor and Slipper Islands.
Ratahi

The Ratahi (15M) is Tauranga's first charter boat.

Ratahi was built in 1938 by Jerry Williams, specifically for running line-fishing trips out of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui and has been doing these trips regularly ever since.

Recently upgraded, she now has more home comforts, a roomy wheelhouse and yet the same old-fashioned charm she has always been known for.
A great half or full day out with the family, friends, clients or work mates - she has seating right around the boat, and solid bulwarks, with protection over about half the vessel from the sun, rain and wind.

Ratahi is ideally suited for groups of up to 25 people for fishing or diving trips.

Sarah loves fishing and especially pulling up the big ones. She knows a lot about all aspects of fishing and is ready and willing to help you plan a trip to remember.
HUGH ENSOR

Skipper Hugh Ensor grew up with an intense love of the sea, spending his boyhood years on the East Coast near Gisborne learning a love of fishing and hunting and the "Great Outdoors". After finishing school he did an apprenticeship as an Engineer which has stood him in good stead when it comes to maintaining the three vessels.
After that some years were spent hunting deer and goats for the Government in various locations around New Zealand. These skills have now been honed and are put into practice on the sea hunting fish. Hugh's childhood love of the sea led to him following a career as a commercial diver, at which he proved to be very adept. He spent six years working in various countries in the offshore oilfield industry. Hugh holds a NZ Commercial Launch Masters ticket. Second to none, he has an awesome reputation for putting fish on the boat, specializing in reef and hapuka fishing anywhere in the Bay of Plenty.
SCOTT ENSOR

Scott was brought up on boats.

He is a hunter and gatherer making him an awesome and determined Skipper. This guy has a real passion for fishing and diving and knows the industry really well. People love going fishing with Scott, he takes his job seriously and gets the results!
A message from Raewyn and Hugh Ensor

As the owners of the three vessels, we take pride in our little fleet and look forward to having you on board for a trip to remember.
